PAYCHECK GUIDE
Include shift allowances in your paycheck check
Night, evening and weekend work can create several small line items. Enter the total allowance amounts for one pay period and see how they affect the gross estimate.
Gather every allowance line
Look for evening, night, weekend, public holiday, responsibility and other taxable additions. Use the amount for the same pay period as the hours you are checking.
Do not guess the allowance rate
Rates may be fixed amounts, hourly additions or percentages. Calculate them from the agreement that applies to you, or enter the total shown in your records.
Keep overtime and shift allowances separate
An overtime payment and a night allowance may apply to the same shift, but they are different items. Keeping them separate makes it easier to locate a missing or incorrect line.
Turn the result into a useful question
If your estimate differs from the payslip, identify which category creates the difference. A specific question about one allowance is easier for payroll to answer than a general complaint.
