PAYCHECK GUIDE

How to read a payslip without missing the important lines

Reviewed 2026-09-08

Payslip layouts vary, but the same checking order works in most cases: identify the period, separate earnings from deductions and reconcile the gross earnings with your own records.

1. Identify the pay period

Find the dates covered by the payslip and the payment date. The payment date may fall after the work period, so use the period rather than the bank date when matching a timesheet.

2. Find ordinary pay and hours

Check the number of ordinary hours, the hourly rate and the resulting amount. If hours are not printed, compare the ordinary-pay amount with your own records.

3. Review overtime and allowances

Look for overtime hours, multipliers, night or weekend additions, bonuses and corrections. A zero or missing line can be as important as an incorrect amount.

4. Separate gross pay from deductions

Gross pay is earnings before tax and deductions. Net pay is what remains after tax, pension, benefits and other deductions. PayCheck AI compares gross figures.

5. Record unclear items

Write down the exact label and amount of every unclear line. Ask payroll what period, hours and rate were used rather than asking only why the total is different.

Questions and answers
